La Joya, TX - While summer break often means time away from the classroom, incoming freshmen across La Joya ISD are using their summer to gain a head start on their future through the district's P-TECH Summer Bridge Program.

Designed to ease the transition into high school, the program provides students with academic support in Math and English while introducing them to college experiences, career pathways, and hands-on learning opportunities through a partnership with South Texas College (STC). By combining classroom instruction with real-world experiences, Summer Bridge helps students build confidence, develop essential academic skills, and begin exploring careers aligned with their chosen P-TECH pathways.A group of young people and an adult man pose for a photo in a workshop setting.

Throughout the first week of the program, students from Palmview High School, La Joya High School, and Juarez-Lincoln High School participated in immersive career exploration activities while strengthening the foundational skills needed for future success in college and the workforce.

Palmview High School students participated in Precision Manufacturing and Cybersecurity experiences that introduced them to advanced manufacturing concepts, robotics, drones, and engineering-related career pathways.

Through the Summer Bridge Program, students get to start their high school experience early while advancing their English and Math TSI skills,” said Annabelle Garza, P-Tech Instructor at Palmview High School. “Students get to meet future teachers, explore campuses, and get exposed to new curriculum beyond just the core classes.”

At La Joya High School, students explored Welding Technology at South Texas College, where they learned industry safety practices, technical skills, and career opportunities within the growing field.

Meanwhile, students from Juarez-Lincoln High School participated in Electrical Technology experiences where they learned about wiring, electrical systems, and technical skills through hands-on projects and collaborative activities. Through this program, students gained a deeper understanding of electrical systems by learning how electricity flows through circuits and practicing wiring electrical light switches.

By combining rigorous academics, college exposure, and hands-on career exploration, the P-TECH Summer Bridge Program supports Priority 2: Empowered Graduates and Priority 3: Thriving Students under La Joya ISD's Achieving Excellence Together: 2030 Strategic Plan.

The P-TECH Summer Bridge Program is more than preparing students for the first day of high school. It is an opportunity for students to build friendships, strengthen academic skills, explore future careers, and begin envisioning the possibilities that lie ahead.
